Seven kinds of business where standard bookkeeping produces a technically correct set of numbers that answers none of the questions you have.
Every business gets a profit and loss and a balance sheet. What changes by sector is which questions those documents need to answer, and how the underlying bookkeeping has to be structured for them to answer it.
A contractor needs to know which job made money. A nonprofit needs to show which fund paid for what. A dental practice runs on collections against production and an overhead percentage. A property investor needs each door reported separately. None of that comes out of a general chart of accounts, and retrofitting it later means reclassifying every transaction.
These seven are the sectors we work in most, and in each one the structure gets set up correctly at the start rather than corrected two years in.
Each one is a full service with its own structure, reporting, and set of things that commonly go wrong.
Fund accounting with restricted and unrestricted money kept genuinely separate, functional expense allocation on a documented basis, grant tracking against each award, and reporting written for a volunteer board rather than for accountants.
Read about it →Every property tracked as its own ledger and rolled up to a portfolio view. Capital improvements separated from repairs, deposits treated as liabilities, and mortgage payments split into principal, interest and escrow.
Read about it →Reimbursement reconciled against billing so contractual adjustments and denials are visible, revenue recorded at what will actually be collected, and contribution reported by provider and by location.
Read about it →Every settlement broken into gross sales, refunds, platform commission, processing and advertising deductions, with multi-channel consolidation and inventory tracked at landed cost.
Read about it →Fiduciary records kept to the standard a beneficiary is entitled to expect. Principal and income separated, a documented opening inventory, and formal accountings produced in proper form.
Read about it →Production reconciled to collection, supply and lab costs isolated as a percentage of collections, hygiene assessed as its own centre, and owner compensation separated so operating profit is comparable.
Read about it →Job costing with every cost coded to the job that incurred it, a work in progress schedule each period showing over and under billings, and retainage tracked on both receivables and subcontractor payables.
Read about it →Specialty engagements run with businesses across Cedar Park, TX, Leander, TX, Round Rock, TX, Georgetown, TX, Austin, TX and Pflugerville, TX, with clients in San Diego, CA, Carlsbad, CA and Escondido, CA, and with owners elsewhere in the country. Sector structure travels; only the local cost and market context changes.
