Home / Bookkeeping / Bank reconciliation
The reconciliation piece on its own, for businesses that already handle their own coding but need someone to prove the balances.
Reconciliation is the check that makes bookkeeping mean anything. It confirms that what the books say happened is what the bank says happened, and it is the single most common thing to get skipped when a business keeps its own records.
This engagement is narrow on purpose. You keep coding your own transactions. We reconcile every account against the statement, trace whatever does not agree, and tell you what we found.
Operating and savings accounts, every credit card, lines of credit, loans, and merchant or payment processor accounts.
Duplicates, missing entries, transactions posted to the wrong month, and transfers recorded twice. We find the cause rather than forcing a balancing entry.
Old outstanding checks and deposits in transit that have sat on the reconciliation for months get identified and dealt with.
A dated reconciliation report per account so there is evidence the work was done, which matters if a lender or an adviser ever asks.
This suits businesses with capable internal bookkeeping and no independent check on it.
Someone codes the day-to-day well, but nobody else ever verifies the balances. A second set of eyes on the reconciliation is a reasonable control.
You are comfortable in QuickBooks and want to stay in it. You just do not want to spend your evenings chasing a fourteen dollar difference.
The reconciliation has been carrying an unexplained difference for a while and it keeps growing. That gets traced rather than plugged.
You send or share the statements for every account, or we pull them from the feeds where access allows.
Line by line against the ledger, with anything that does not match set aside for investigation instead of forced.
You get a short list of what did not agree and why, along with the correcting entries needed if you want to make them yourself.
A reconciliation report per account, dated and filed, so the record exists.
For a small business in Cedar Park, TX or anywhere in the Austin area, the person who records the money is often the person who handles it. Independent reconciliation is the simplest control there is against both honest error and something worse, and it costs very little compared to what it catches. We provide the same service remotely to clients across San Diego County.
We can reconcile the balances, but we will tell you what we saw. If coding errors are widespread the reconciliation will keep failing, and at that point cleanup work is the honest recommendation.
Monthly, on every account. Anything less and errors compound quietly, which is exactly how a small difference becomes a long investigation.
We can, or we can hand you the list and you post them. Some clients want the control to stay in house, and that is a reasonable position.
Then the first pass is really a cleanup, and we scope it that way. Once the opening position is proved, ongoing reconciliation is straightforward.
